more about emma
A voice assistant that decides on your Mac
Emma doesn't send what you say to the cloud to decide what to do. This is what stays on your Mac and what leaves it.
What stays on your Mac
- The word "Emma": it is detected on the Mac. Before she hears it, no audio leaves.
- The decision: a local brain picks what to do, with no language model.
- What you ask her to remember. And what she does, she does with your Mac's apps (Messages, Mail, Calendar, your files), not from a server of ours.
- Your keys and secrets: in the macOS Keychain.
What leaves
To hear you and talk back she uses a voice service: it gets the audio of what you say to turn it into text, and the text of her answer to turn it into speech. It goes straight from your Mac to that service, without passing through our server.
What never leaves
What she decides and what she keeps about you. No language model reads your messages, your calendar or what you tell her. The privacy page explains it in detail.
When she arrives
Emma is coming to your Mac very soon. She needs macOS 14 or newer on an Apple Silicon Mac. Leave your email at the foot of this page and we'll tell you the day you can install her.
